<p>Despite the importance and popularity of the concept of circularity in literature, a common and extensive knowledge of the transition from linearity to circularity including their characteristics and effects is still patchy in the extant literature. Consequently, this study proposes a model that offers an in-depth knowledge of the various phases in transitioning from linearity to new sustainable paradigms. It offers useful knowledge to business managers and extends the frontiers of circular economy research. This study used the systematic literature review approach to identify the various stages, traits and effects of the transtition. The study proposes a comprehensive matrix termed a <i>“linearity to circularity transition matrix”</i> (LCTM). Further, the characteristics and effects of each transition stage are unpacked. Additionally, emphasis is placed on the evolution of business models vis-à-vis the evolutions in human development by meticulously interweaving the transitional stages with the phases in industrial revolutions. The study highlights the status quo and provides directions for future research in the field. To the best of our knowledge, this is a novel attempt by a single study to comprehensively structure the various transitional stages, their traits and effects in a unique and integrated framework. The LCTM offers scholars and practitioners a panoramic view of the transitions from linearity to circularity.</p>
