A field survey was conducted on 385 children, each sampled from selected DP. Children were first divided into disturbed (DC) and undisturbed children (UDC) using a score limit of ED index, who were subsequently sub-grouped for their companion siblings being DC (weak) or UDC (strong). Comparisons were made amongst children groups and subgroups in quest of ED level, variables associated with ED and logistic regression coefficients. Pearson χ2 test was the basis of choosing variables that influenced ED of sample children. Even with a large ED variation between DC and UDC, negligible differences were observed in ED index and its three sub-indices between companion subgroups of either group. Parents’ mental illness and the other five variables stating children’s living conditions scored worse for DC than that of UDC, which was similar for weak companion subgroups, too. Logistic regression model for the entire sample also showed significantly higher negative impacts of six variables on the ED of DC. In the model for DC, three variables were significant, whereas all were insignificant in the case of UDC. This study, with a sample survey, explored ED variations amongst children’s groups and subgroups. Negligible variation for companions led to a search for disparities in ED-associated variables that exhibited differential impacts on children’s ED in Bangladesh.</p>

摘要

This study identified variations in educational development (ED) among children of mentally disturbed parents (DP) and measured impacts of mental illness and other related factors on children’s ED. Negligible variation for companions led to a search for disparities in ED-associated variables that exhibited differential impacts on children’s ED in Bangladesh.
