<p>Urban markets remain significant hubs for human mobility and associated activities for livelihood sustenance. The issue of urban markets dynamics has not received greater attention despite the need of urban markets to contain increasing population. It is against this backdrop that this study intends to investigate urban markets dynamics and population accessibility in the Bamenda II and III municipalities. The study was conducted in the Bamenda Central Market (BCM), Food Market (FM), Ntarikon Market (NM) in Bamenda II Municipality, Mobile Nkwen Market (MNM) and Mile 4 Nkwen Market (M4NM) in Bamenda III Municipality using both the survey and correlation research designs. Primary and secondary sources of data were collected to underpin the study. Field observation and the use of 148 copies of questionnaire were used to collect primary data from the target population using the simple random and stratified sampling techniques. The data were analyzed using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation aided by the use of SPSS version 21. The results revealed that there has been a significant growth in urban markets infrastructural dynamics in Bamenda in terms of building of new shops (BCM 70.0%; NM 52.17%; MNM 47.23%; M4NM 18.38%), numbering of shops (BCM 67.5%; NM 56.52%; MNM 44.49%; M4NM 29.35%), providing tarred surfaces within the urban markets (BCM 57.5%; NM 34.78%; MNM 44.49%; M4NM 5.16%) and innovation of old shops (BCM 55%; NM 69.56%; MNM 56.41%; M4NM 14.59%). Other aspects such as tarring of markets, provision of market taps, security cameras and toilets and the regular cleaning of waste are equally emerging dynamic trends in the urban markets. The study further revealed that there has been more horizontal dynamics of shops (BCM 70%; NM 56%; FM 82%; MNM 57.58%; M4NM 73.33%) than vertical construction (BCM 30%; NM 44%; FM 17%; MNM 42.42%; M4NM 26.67%) such that the space for horizontal expansion is becoming scarce. Findings further showed that population accessibility to the urban markets of Bamenda is determined by market size and availability of goods and services offered to the populace (BCM and FM considered as big and NM, MNM and M4NM as average size markets), distance to the market (66.15% of the population cover &gt; 1.5&#xa0;km to BCM, 43.92% to FM, 37.16% to NM, 39.86 to MNM, 22.97% to M4NM), transport cost and customer-seller relationship. The study recommends peripheral construction of modern markets given the urban sprawl and growth effects in line with the urban development plan and future growth direction of the area. Construction of new peripheral markets should act as a pull factor to development and not markets chasing development.</p>

Urban markets dynamics and population accessibility in the Bamenda II and III municipalities, Cameroon

Findings further showed that population accessibility to the urban markets of Bamenda is determined by market size and availability of goods and services offered to the populace (BCM and FM considered as big and NM, MNM and M4NM as average size markets), distance to the market (66.15% of the population cover > 1.5 km to BCM, 43.92% to FM, 37.16% to NM, 39.86 to MNM, 22.97% to M4NM), transport cost and customer-seller relationship.
