Effect of thinning on carbon stocks in Sonneratia apetala Buch. -Ham plantations: a simulation study in Bangladesh

Mangroves are amongst the most efficient carbon-sequestering ecosystems, and S. apetala is one of the key species which is planted along the coastal belt in Bangladesh. However, silvicultural operations like thinning on the carbon stock of this planted species is still inconclusive. Here, several silvicultural approaches (with or without thinning and with or without recruitment) was conducted to compare the development of planted forests in terms of forest management. Also, an individual-based model (e.g., KiWi model) has been created to evaluate demographic processes in coastal mangrove forests using abiotic environmental parameters. The findings demonstrate that 3.5 m radius thinning produces the highest aboveground carbon stocks in in S. apetala plantations in the study area. In Bangladesh coastal plantations, the 2.5 m and 3.0 m thinning radius are ideal because they include an adequate number of trees while producing as much aboveground carbon as the 3.5 m thinning radius. This experiment strongly demonstrates that the KiWi model can simulate genuine dynamic growth patterns and that thinning has an influence on carbon stock. Simulation experiments tailored to the study sites’ configurations gave a forecast of future stand development, which is critical for mangrove forest management and policy implementation.
