<p>In recent years, the quality of democracy in Mexico has declined gradually but steadily. Several indices agree that democracy has been particularly affected by the arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the Executive Branch in 2018, labelled by the literature as a populist leader. By reviewing López Obrador’s governmental actions, this article will study the relationship between the President’s populist attitudes and the quality of democracy in Mexico. The methodology employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive scope, providing a thorough discussion of the populist administration and democratic backsliding in the Mexican case. Furthermore, the analysis of <i>Team Populism’s</i> holistic grading of López Obrador’s actions and discourses, as well as democratic indices to demonstrate the democratic backlash, has been mostly evident during AMLO’s administration. The primary objective is to examine how the populist administration behaved in office, thereby undermining Mexican democracy. This article will focus on the Government’s functioning and, specifically, the former President’s leadership, tendencies, and decisions that have influenced Mexico’s future.</p>
