LULC changes and driving forces thereof in Ziro Valley, Lower Subansiri District, Arunachal Pradesh

Ziro valley of Arunachal Pradesh in India is inhabited by the Apatani tribe. The tribe shares a very interdependent and harmonious relationship with the environment. Known for their sustainable ways of living, this tribe believes in protecting nature and has methods to sustain natural resources. They follow a settled pattern of life and are agrarian However, in recent times; it has been observed that there is tremendous pressure on the traditional sustainable land use practices of the valley. Due to the growth and expansion of economic activities increasing areas are put into use like urban, commercial, industrial, and residential. The percentage of urban population in Ziro valley has increased to 15.42% in 2011 from 10.66% in 1991. The conversion of natural areas to cultivable land, commercial logging, construction of houses, and establishment of industries and commercial areas in agricultural land is increasing in rapid phases at Ziro Valley. The growing urbanization and expanding commercial cultivation, industrialization, commercial logging, and expanding settlement are responsible for the land use and land cover change in the Valley. Apart from forest degradation, land conversion into nonagricultural and commercial agricultural uses through increasing urbanization significantly affects the biodiversity and land degradation of the valley. This study analyzed the changing land use and land cover in the Ziro Valley from 2002 to 2023. There is complex conversion among the land covers. The maximum changes are observed in the increase in built-up areas from 2002 to 2023 which is 186.15%. It is observed that the agricultural lands have been converted into non agricultural activities and the lack of interest among the young generation towards traditional livelihood practices and exposure to the modern world. These findings provide decision support for the sustainable policy making and further promote the exploration of causes behind growing land use land cover change in the study area.
