<p>The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has ignited diverse sociotechnical imaginaries, encompassing both utopian visions of technological advancement and dystopian fears of societal disruption. These imaginaries, constructed by various societal actors, significantly influence public perception and policy-making regarding AI. This study aims to explore and analyze the dominant narratives surrounding AI in Italy, particularly those related to ChatGPT tool. By examining these narratives, the research seeks to uncover the underlying expectations and concerns that shape public engagement with AI technologies. The study uses data collected from social media platforms, particularly Facebook, to capture public discourse on AI. Semantic network analysis and text mining techniques are applied to a dataset of over 3000 Facebook posts discussing ChatGPT and AI extracted by API scraping techniques. The analysis reveals a complex landscape of AI-related discourse, characterized by both utopian and dystopian narratives. Utopian narratives emphasize AI’s potential to enhance human capabilities, foster innovation, and address global challenges. Conversely, dystopian narratives highlight concerns about privacy, security, job displacement, and the potential exacerbation of social inequalities. The study underscores the importance of inclusive and participatory approaches to AI governance. Understanding and addressing the diverse narratives that shape public perception is crucial for policymakers to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.</p>
