Migrants and integration: Is it towards a more pragmatic Finland?

  • Egharevba Stephen

摘要

Social justice, global citizenship, and sustainability have become central themes in contemporary discourse, alongside terms like integration and diversity, which are increasingly relevant due to the rising influx of migrants into European countries. In Finland, diversity is often interpreted through the lens of language acquisition and labor market participation, with integration policies emphasizing these aspects. However, achieving meaningful integration requires broader attention to social justice, sustainability, tolerance, and employment opportunities, along with respect for migrants’ rights. This paper argues that fostering mutual understanding between migrants and host communities, particularly by addressing conflicts arising from cultural and systemic differences, is vital. Policymakers must adopt a more nuanced approach that considers the needs of both migrants and the officials responsible for facilitating their integration.
