The impact of university housing on student success in higher education: the Ghanaian perspective

Adequate and serene campus housing can facilitate a seamless educational journey. Thus, this paper investigates the effect of university housing facilities on students’ academic performance. This paper is based on the means-end-chain theory. Quantitative approach and cross-sectional survey design were used to collect data from 317 respondents through random sampling. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and regression analysis were used to analyse the data. The results indicate a significantly positive relationship (β = 0.211, p < 0.01) between university housing facilities on students’ academic performance. Additionally, a statistically significant difference was observed between females and males regarding the influence of university housing facilities on their academic performance. This paper is a developing country perspective study of students’ housing and their academic performance that reveals that limited housing facilities could have a negative effect on students’ academic performance. By creating a more welcoming environment and providing additional support services, universities can help students reach their full potential.
