An assessment of the utilization of open spaces on university campuses: a case study of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana

The utilization of open spaces on university campuses has long been recognized as an important aspect of the physical environment, greatly affecting the quality of campus life. This study analyzes the utilization and perception of open spaces at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) using mixed methods, including surveys and observations, to identify key factors influencing their use. The study involved 300 respondents from various academic levels and colleges, revealing a high level of awareness and utilization, though usage declines as students progress through their academic years. Factors such as internet connectivity, seating availability, and natural elements significantly influence open space use. Students perceive these spaces positively, citing their contribution to recreation, connection with nature, and campus aesthetics. The study highlights the multifunctional roles of open spaces in supporting academic, social, and personal well-being. Recommendations include enhancing design elements, improving amenities, and ensuring adaptability to meet evolving student needs, offering valuable insights for campus planning and design initiatives.
