A debate on general education reform in Mainland China: a qualitative case study of two universities

Over the past few years, there have been significant curricular and institutional changes in Chinese universities, particularly in general education reform. This study aims to examine the ongoing debate surrounding general education reform in mainland China’s universities, with a specific focus on its similarities and differences from Western models. It also highlights the inherent contradictions within the context of general education reform. This research employs a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews and document analysis to gather in-depth insights from key stakeholders, including faculty members, administrators, and students. By considering diverse perspectives, this study seeks to illuminate the innovative aspects of the reform efforts and their impact on the broader educational landscape. The findings reveal the various reform strategies adopted by Chinese universities in response to the challenges posed by globalization and the demand for a well-rounded education. Additionally, it uncovers the unique characteristics of the Chinese general education model, taking into account its distinct cultural and educational context. In conclusion, this research provides a comprehensive analysis of general education reform in mainland China, highlighting its connections and discrepancies with Western models. The study contributes to the field by offering valuable insights into the evolving educational landscape in China and providing recommendations for future policies and practices.
