How Sambhu Nath De’s discovery changed the fight against cholera
摘要
Cholera is a life-threatening diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae, which secretes a toxin that disrupts the electrolyte balance in the intestinal cells. Sambhu Nath De was an Indian medical scientist who discovered the cholera toxin and its mechanism of action using a novel experimental model: the rabbit intestinal loop. His seminal work, conducted in the 1950s and 1960s, challenged the prevailing theories of cholera pathogenesis and suggested the optimal treatment of oral or intravenous rehydration therapy. Although De's research was internationally acclaimed and nominated for the Nobel Prize, he received little recognition in his own country. His death in 1985, left behind a legacy of scientific excellence and humanitarian service. His work on the cholera toxin has opened new avenues for the development of vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics for cholera and other diarrhoeal diseases. He truly is one of the greatest medical scientists of all time.
