<p>Once a seat of scientific grandeur, the Travancore Observatory showcased 189&#xa0;years of fruition recently. Meandering through 140&#xa0;years of administrative handovers and mandate changeovers, a historical look at the observatory’s scientific productions unearths geomagnetic discoveries that were never celebrated. Volumes of Travancore productions remain confined as historical accounts of the Kingdom, and the science published in them remains forgotten. The first ground-based mapping of the magnetic equator in southern India was achieved in 1839 through the collaborative efforts of Caldecott and Taylor, who had then served as the directors of the Travancore and Madras observatories, respectively. The southern migration of the magnetic equator on the west coast of India was reported in 1859 by John Allan Broun, who had served as Director of the Travancore observatory from 1852 to 1869. Based on the ground-based magnetic measurements made at the observatory, the epochs of absence of migration of the magnetic equator, its northward migration, and the reversal in the direction of migration of the dip equator can be determined from the analysis of the Travancore productions up to 1941. After the birth of an independent India, the data from the observatory served as the primary reference point for magnetic field calibration for a generation of researchers studying the migration of the magnetic equator in India. By 1999, the magnetic observations at Travancore were stopped. Established by a young king with a vision for the growth of science in his Kingdom, the scientific productions of his observatory laid the foundation for the evolution of present-day flourishing institutions dedicated to full-scale research on meteorology and geomagnetism in India. In the changing world, the Travancore Observatory continues to strive with limited research patronage as an amateur astronomy institute.</p>
