<p>Reproductive success in fishes depends on the complex interactions of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including hormonal regulation and cellular signalling. Neurotrophic factors, primarily known for their role in nervous system development, have been recognized as regulators of reproductive functions. Studies in mammals have shown that, the Neurturin (NRTN), a member of Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family, plays a vital role reproduction. But the existence of NRTN in fish gonad is not known. So the present study attempted to localize the NRTN in the ovary of freshwater catfish <i>Clarias batrachus</i>. The study found that NRTN expresses in ovary and expression is not constitutive during ovarian activities of this catfish. Immunohistochemical study revealed that the intensity of NRTN expression was high during the early and late quiescence phase which gradually declined to late recrudescence and spawning phases. Intense immnolocalization signals were observed in perinuclear oocytes which decreased gradually in advanced stages of oocytes. Pearson’s correlation also showed the significant negative correlation between NRTN expression and ovarian 7β-estradiol and testosterone. The finding of this study shows that NRTN exists in the ovary of <i>Clarias batrachus</i>. This suggests that NRTN has role in ovarian folliculogenesis in catfish ovary.</p>
