AHP-based landslide susceptibility assessment along National highway 7 (651.000 KM to 731.000 KM) in India

Landslides along highways are increasing significantly in the Himalayan region. The landslides along the highways prevents the movement of the traffic and sometimes results in loss of lives. National Highway 7 (NH-7) in Uttarakhand is an important highway that pass through Chamoli district. The primary objective of this study is to develop a landslide susceptibility map along a stretch of NH 7. To prioritize the causative variables and sub-factors, nine factors contributing to landslides are considered. The topography, geological, hydrological, and drainage characteristics of the research area are taken into account when selecting the triggering variables. AHP is utilized to assess the weighting of these causative factors, which are further categorized into sub-factors. A landslide susceptibility map along NH-7 was created by overlaying the causative factors within a GIS environment, and the map was classified into four categories: low, moderate, high, and very high. The variation of landslide susceptibility index ranges from 1.026 to 4.694. A region of high and very high landslide susceptibility encompasses approximately 57% of the research area. About 40% of the landslide-prone area is situated within the 24% of the research area that is classified as having extremely high landslide susceptibility. The results of the study are validated using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), which indicates a prediction accuracy of 0.789. The findings of this study can be utilized by researchers and professionals engaged in landslide hazard assessment and mitigation.
