Flowering, yield and quality of small-grain GI-tagged aromatic rice (cv. Radhunipagal) under varied planting parameters and nutrition in lower gangetic plains

The flowering, yield and quality of small-grain non-Basmati aromatic rice (cv. Radhunipagal, GI No. 1042/2025) was studied under varied planting techniques and nutrient management in three multi-locational field trials conducted at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Nadia, West Bengal, India. The flower initiation of tall-indica rice was more influenced by planting time than sowing time, while the crop raised with different seedling ages [25 days (A25), 35 days (A35) and 45 days (A45)] had variation in life duration and summed GDD, but flowering in similar time (10–21 October, day length ± 11.64 h). Although A25 improved the grain yield (2.53 t ha−1) and A45 recorded maximum alkali spreading value (score 3.3), but seedling age had no influence on aroma due to very close period of post-flowering to maturity. Planting in end of July (D30J) resulted in highest grain yield (2.43 t ha−1) being 4.5 and 10.7% greater over mid. July (D15J) and mid. August (D15A) plantings, along with greater head rice recovery (61.6%) and medium-strong aroma (score 2.4). Wide-square spaced crop (20 cm × 20 cm) had less lodging tendency (score 2.1) and maximum protein content (6.3%), but close-square planting (15 cm × 15 cm, 44 hills m−2) led to higher grain yield (2.52 t ha−1). The application of FYM @ 4 t + N40P20K20 kg ha−1 resulted in greater yield (2.37 t ha−1) and amylose content (17.3%), while root dipping with Azospirillum caused 11.3% greater yield and favoured aroma formation over no bio-fertilizer application in new alluvial soil.
