Tylosis formation and micro evaluation of three different heartwood of Devadaru, Sarala and Vijaysar: a scientific study

Heartwood formation is a critical physiological process in trees, often accompanied by tylosis development, which plays a vital role in natural durability and resistance to decay. This study aimed to investigate and compare tylosis formation and associated macro and micro structural features in the heartwoods of three ethnomedicinally significant tree species namely Cedrus deodara (Devadaru), Pinus roxburghii (Sarala), and Pterocarpus marsupium (Vijaysar). The samples of C. deodara and P. roxburghii were collected from Kinnaur District and sample of P. marsupium was collected from Pharmacy ITRA, Jamnagar, Gujarat. Detailed macroscopic and microscopic evaluations were conducted using transverse and radial sections of matured heartwood samples using light and corl-zeiss trinocular microscopy. The results revealed significant interspecies variation in the extent of tylosis formation. P. marsupium exhibited extensive tylosis development, contributing to its high resistance to microbial invasion. In contrast, C. deodara and P. roxburghii showed moderate and minimal tylosis, respectively. These findings suggest that the degree of tylosis formation is correlated with heartwood durability and may serve as a functional marker in evaluating wood quality for medicinal and commercial applications. This study provides foundational insights into the anatomical basis of heartwood protection mechanisms across different species.
