Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) are key components of Kenya’s economy. However, ASM brings along a complex set of environmental and socio-economic challenges. Mine water management stands out as a significant issue, often resulting in environmental pollution. This research underscores the importance of addressing these concerns, which have multifaceted consequences for the local communities in Kenya. This, therefore, emphasizes the compelling need to implement sustainable and responsible mining practices. The approach to the socio-economic issues arising from mine water contamination in the context of ASM in Kenya entails a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, including surveys, interviews, and community assessments, aimed at gathering data on critical aspects like access to clean water, health implications, economic repercussions, and the overall well-being of affected communities. Uniquely, the research methodology involves integrating data from diverse sources, encompassing mining communities, local authorities, and relevant stakeholders. This holistic perspective provides a more nuanced understanding of the challenges faced. The research uncovered several pivotal findings.
