<p><i>Ferula pseudalliacea</i> (<i>F</i>. <i>pseudalliacea</i>) has been used in traditional medicine for healing wounds and cuts and relieving itching. In the present study, we investigated the effect of intraperitoneal (i.p) administration of methanolic extract of <i>F. pseudalliacea</i> (MEFP) on formalin-induced pain in male rats. Rats were pretreated with different doses of MEFP (25, 50, and 100&#xa0;mg/kg, i.p), indomethacin (2.5&#xa0;mg/kg, i.p), or morphine (5&#xa0;mg/kg, i.p.) as positive controls or naloxone (0.4&#xa0;mg/kg, i.p.) as an opioid antagonist, 30&#xa0;min before formalin injection. Rats received formalin (2.5%, 50&#xa0;µl) intraplantary into the right hind paw. Pain-like behavior was recorded for 50&#xa0;min. The result showed that MEFP (100&#xa0;mg/kg) significantly reduced pain in the acute phase (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) and the doses (50 and 100&#xa0;mg/kg) in the chronic phase (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), in a dose-dependent manner. Concurrent injection of MEFP (25, 50, and 100&#xa0;mg/kg) with morphine or indomethacin significantly decreased (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) licking time after injection of formalin, in comparison to rats that received only extract, indomethacin, or morphine, in the chronic phase but not in the acute phase. Furthermore, naloxone had no significant effect on the licking time resulting from injection of formalin after injection of MEFP (100&#xa0;mg/kg) in acute and chronic phases. We found that injection of MEFP has an antinociceptive effect in the formalin test, in both acute and chronic phases, in an independent mechanism of the opioid system. We suggest that MEFP can be used as adjuvant therapy along with commonly used antinociceptive drugs.</p>
