Novel implications of molecular markers and genomic selection in tree breeding

A molecular marker is a significant tool through which the efficiency of tree breeding can be enhanced. The efficiency will depend on the heritability and the amount of total genetic variation defined by genetic markers. Marker-assisted selection is capable of assisting breeders in the selection of desired genotypes, decreasing the reproductive cycle, and selecting the desired genotype efficiently. The selection of markers for plant breeding is based on two approaches: Quantitative trait locus mapping and association genetic studies. Recently, genomic selection (GS) has been introduced, a high-density marker useful to predict phenotypes from genotypes. In this review, molecular markers are discussed as a tool, and their advantages, limitations, selection procedure, and future aspects in tree breeding.
