A comprehensive enumeration of seaweed species diversity from Gulf of Kutch Marine National Park, India: suggestions for sustainable management and conservation
摘要
A marine renewable resource, seaweed, is gaining considerable attention due to its multifarious applications. About 865 species from 234 genera have been reported till date from Indian waters; the Gulf of Kutch (GoK) is a Marine Protected Area (MPA) that harbors considerable seaweed diversity. The sporadic publications have recorded floristic accounts, but the most comprehensive enumeration of seaweed is still lacking. Based on the literature, we attempted to provide (i) systematic enumeration documenting seaweeds of GoK Marine National Park (GoKMNP); and (ii) diversity data analysis (Simpson’s index of diversity, Shannon Wiener (Shannon Weaver) diversity index, Species Richness, and Species Evenness). The seaweed diversity of GoKMNP when compared with island systems in India viz. Gulf of Mannar (GoM), Andaman, and Nicobar Islands; and from Indian Ocean island systems viz. Rodrigues, Mauritius and Sri Lanka; long with main-land-coast of Gujarat revealed specific differences. A total of 220 seaweed species with 9 varieties and a form were enumerated from GoKMNP. Simpson’s index was 0.65; Shannon Weiner index was 1.07; Species Richness was 5.39 and Species Evenness was 0.20. The region holds considerable potential for sustainable management and conservation, for which we provided comprehensive recommendations.
