<p>Donald Trump’s transactionalist (and personalist) brand of international policy has brought significant changes to US-European relations. These include negative effects on institutional ties and characterization of economic allies as exploiters of the US. Longstanding European partners are threatened with tariffs and territorial acquisitions while traditional unity in policy, for example on Ukraine, or democratic norms has been sacrificed. The consequences for Europe include a push for European countries to reduce defense dependence on the US; a drive to find other trade partners; and an erosion of US democratic leadership.</p>
