摘要

Behavioral observation is a fundamental contribution of applied behavior analysis (ABA). This contribution to the special issue discusses how we advanced classroom observational assessment at the Juniper Gardens Children’s Project (JGCP). We sought to learn more about the role played by variations in alterable instruction in relationship to the achievement gap. We developed the capacity to investigate the structure and function of the teacher’s instruction contemporaneous with a child’s academically engaged behavior in inner-city school classrooms. We termed this innovation Ecobehavioral Assessment and Analysis (EBAA). We developed and validated five ecobehavioral observation instruments over the last 40 years and provided the materials, software, and websites needed to make them accessible and useable by others. We discuss and illustrate EBAA’s value-addition to the field including the concept of opportunity to respond, uses in intervention decision making, instructional design, and progress monitoring. Implications are discussed.
