Bennett Fracture Associated with Trapezium Fracture: A Rare Injury Pattern—A Case Series and Literature Review

Bennett fractures are intra-articular fractures involving the base of the first metacarpal and are commonly associated with carpometacarpal (CMC) joint instability. Fractures of the trapezium are uncommon, and their association with Bennett fractures is rare.
Case PresentationWe report a case series of two patients with combined Bennett fractures and trapezium fractures. Both patients were managed with closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation, including additional transfixation to the second metacarpal for carpometacarpal joint stabilization.
ResultsAt follow-up, both patients demonstrated radiological union with restoration of joint congruity and pain-free thumb motion. Functional recovery was satisfactory, with good grip strength and return to daily activities. Both patients had a QuickDASH score of 3/100 at final follow-up.
ConclusionCombined Bennett and trapezium fractures are rare injuries that require careful clinical and radiographic evaluation for accurate diagnosis. In this small case series, both patients demonstrated satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes at follow-up. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to better define optimal management strategies.
