Introduction <p>Arthroscopic procedures have demonstrated good short- and long-term outcomes as compared to open surgeries. Though arthroscopy is considered to be a safer procedure, this paper aims to review established and emerging risk factors for infection in shoulder arthroscopy.</p> Materials and Methods <p>A comprehensive search of Medline (Ovid), Embase, CINAHL, and PubMed was done from inception till January 2025. </p> Discussion <p>We have summarised our findings based on each risk factor identified and&#xa0;the&#xa0;relevance. Patient-related risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, corticosteroid injection, older age, previous surgery, ASA grade, hypertension, gender, smoking and alcohol consumption, and malnutrition, have been presented in the paper. We also have looked at surgery related risk factors, such as duration of surgery, use of various implants, and type of arthroscopic surgery.</p> Conclusion <p>Our findings have important clinical implications for preventing the occurrence of infection after shoulder arthroscopy.</p>

Introduction

Arthroscopic procedures have demonstrated good short- and long-term outcomes as compared to open surgeries. Though arthroscopy is considered to be a safer procedure, this paper aims to review established and emerging risk factors for infection in shoulder arthroscopy.

Materials and Methods

A comprehensive search of Medline (Ovid), Embase, CINAHL, and PubMed was done from inception till January 2025.

Discussion

We have summarised our findings based on each risk factor identified and the relevance. Patient-related risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, corticosteroid injection, older age, previous surgery, ASA grade, hypertension, gender, smoking and alcohol consumption, and malnutrition, have been presented in the paper. We also have looked at surgery related risk factors, such as duration of surgery, use of various implants, and type of arthroscopic surgery.

Conclusion

Our findings have important clinical implications for preventing the occurrence of infection after shoulder arthroscopy.
