Background <p>The relationship between surgeons and the medical industry is a complex and multifaceted one that has played a pivotal role in advancing surgical care. The surgeon-industry nexus, while potentially beneficial, also presents ethical dilemmas and the risk of misuse, making it a topic of considerable debate within the medical community. Through this narrative review, we aim to examine existing literature to evaluate whether this relationship ultimately serves the public good or poses challenges to ethical medical practice.</p> Methods <p>A PubMed search for Surgeon Industry relationship revealed 387 articles that had been published in the past 20 years, out of which we chose 26 relevant articles for this narrative review.</p> Results <p>Historically, the relationship between surgeons and the medical device industry began as informal partnerships, primarily centred around refining surgical tools based on firsthand operating room experiences. By the twentieth century, these collaborations evolved into more formalized interactions as the complexity of medical advancements necessitated deeper cooperation. Industry collaborations have allowed for the development of ground-breaking technologies such as arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, implant technologies, and the integration of robotics into surgery, to mention a few of them. Despite these benefits, conflicts of interest may arise when financial incentives offered by the industry influence clinical decision-making. Regulation, which may be self or state is the key to keeping this relationship in check.</p> Conclusion <p>While the collaboration between surgeons and the medical industry has the potential to revolutionise healthcare, both parties must engage with integrity, transparency, and a firm commitment to ethical practices.</p>
