Biological Activities of Pistia stratiotes: A Systematic Review with Emphasis on its Insecticidal Potential Against Aedes aegypti

Arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya and zika represent global public health challenges, requiring effective strategies to control the vector Aedes aegypti. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the larvicidal and insecticidal potential of Pistia stratiotes L., Araceae, against Ae. aegypti, with a focus on identifying its main bioactive compounds involved in this activity. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The research question was structured using the PICO strategy—Population: Ae. aegypti in larval, pupal, or adult stages; Intervention: P. stratiotes extracts; Comparison: different solvents or concentrations; Outcome: insecticidal and toxicological effects. Search was carried out in Lilacs, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science databases between January 2024 and February 2025, with no date restrictions. The analysis showed that after screening 1,841 articles, 38 met the eligibility criteria. Among the 38 included studies, 19 addressed biological activities of P. stratiotes, including larvicidal (6/19), antioxidant (8/19), and antibacterial (6/19) properties. Most studies were conducted in Asia (47.4%) and Africa (21.1%). The plant’s leaves were the most frequently used part (74%). Flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins were the predominant phytochemicals. Notably, stigmasterol and glycerol 1-palmitate exhibited significant larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti, with reported LC₅₀ values ranging from 63.3 to 1000 μg/ml depending on the extract and assay conditions. The bioactive compounds present in P. stratiotes, alone or in synergy, show promising potential in the development of therapeutic agents. However, further studies are needed to elucidate safe concentrations, the mechanism of action and to consolidate the use of the extract and isolated pure compounds.
