A hybrid blond-crested woodpecker (Celeus flavescens) × helmeted woodpecker (Celeus galeatus) in an isolated Atlantic Forest fragment

Hybridization has been recorded for approximately 19% of woodpecker species, but not previously between two woodpecker species of the genus Celeus in the Atlantic Forest of South America, the blond-crested woodpecker C. flavescens and the rare, globally threatened helmeted woodpecker C. galeatus. We documented an aberrant Celeus woodpecker in Fritz Plaumann State Park, Santa Catarina, Brazil, between May and July 2025. The aberrant woodpecker had some plumage features of flavescens, including barring on the back and flight feathers, an unbarred face, a spotted malar, and a solid dark breast and belly, as well as plumage features of galeatus, including a red crest, a cream-white triangle on the side of the neck, barred flanks, and light tail coverts. Some morphology features were intermediate between flavescens and galeatus, including bill color, and color of face and front crown. We recorded 33 territorial loud calls of the aberrant woodpecker and these were intermediate in note interval and in frequency of the first harmonic between homologous calls of flavescens and galeatus. We conclude that the aberrant woodpecker is a hybrid individual with flavescens and galeatus parent species, which are not sister species. The hybrid occurred in a small Atlantic Forest fragment with no resident galeatus population, in a landscape matrix of agriculture and small woodlots with abundant flavescens numbers. As the Atlantic Forest with suitable galeatus habitat becomes more fragmented, other hybridization events may occur between these species and may form an additional threat to the persistence of populations of the threatened helmeted woodpecker.
