Opportunistic predation events of mist net-entangled animals in Amazonian white-sand forest patches

Mist nets are commonly used to capture birds and bats. Despite its widespread usage, this sampling method has inherent risks. Even if properly trained people conduct mist net sampling, the trapped animals may suffer injuries which could lead to death. Here, we report the opportunistic predation events observed during fieldwork conducted in patches of white-sand forest in a rural region of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. We recorded seven events of opportunistic predation, of six birds and one bat specimen. One predation event was caused by a spider, another was caused by a lizard, and a third one was likely caused by a hawk. No identifiable predators could be determined in four events. We highlight the importance of reporting events of death and injuries of mist-entangled animals, since this information may guide informed decisions on how to reduce such incidents across various habitats.
