<p>Avian malaria can have detrimental effects on bird health, raising concerns due to anthropogenic activities such as deforestation and climate change. These actions can alter the dynamics of contact between vectors and birds. The prevalence of parasite varies among different bird groups, and evolutionary and taxonomic factors influence it. In this review, we conducted an extensive literature search on malaria prevalence in shorebirds and tested the hypothesis that birds inhabiting inland habitats exhibit higher malaria prevalence compared to those on oceanic islands. The data gathered strongly indicates a higher prevalence of malaria in shorebirds compared to seabirds. Although freshwater birds display significant variation in malaria prevalence, they are not statistically different from the other groups. However, their average prevalence is higher than that observed in shorebirds and seabirds. These differences suggest a potential pattern in avian malaria that may be related to the habitat of these species. Oceanic islands are unfavorable environments for vector reproduction due to their isolation from the continents. The studies reviewed in this work indicate that the further shorebirds are from freshwater sources on the mainland, the lower the risk of contracting malaria. Nonetheless, further studies are crucial to confirm this hypothesis conclusively.</p>
