The conventional boost power factor correction (PFC) converter is widely used due to its simple circuit structure and control. However, it suffers from low efficiency and high heat generation due to significant conduction losses in the bridge diode. Research on bridgeless PFC (BPFC) converters that eliminate the bridge diode has been conducted to address this problem. However, BPFCs have drawbacks, including considerable conduction loss, large magnetic components, severe common mode (CM) noise characteristics, expensive isolated current sensors, and complex driving algorithms. This paper proposes a novel quasi-resonant BPFC that overcomes these limitations. In the proposed BPFC, energy from the input inductor is transferred to a resonant capacitor without a bridge diode under all input voltage conditions. This energy is then delivered to the load through resonance with a resonant inductor. An isolated current sensor is unnecessary because the inductor current always flows along the circuit ground. In addition, the input line is always connected to a low frequency input sinusoidal voltage or circuit ground, resulting in good CM noise characteristics. Two FETs connected back-to-back are simultaneously turned on and off under all input voltage conditions. This simplifies the driving method, enables easy application of general-purpose PFC ICs, and eliminates the risk of arm shorts. The added resonant capacitor and inductor are selected based on a loss analysis and are small enough that they do not significantly affect converter size. The proposed BPFC is presented in two configurations, which allows users to choose based on efficiency and cost considerations. The proposed converter was validated through experimental results obtained from a 400 W prototype.

摘要
