<p>The present research has been particularly oriented to characterize the organic pollutants as phthalates, hydrocarbons in the sediments of Sfax port located in the north of the Gulf of Gabes-Tunisia. As the microalgae performed good results in their bioaccumulation and biodegradation, the identification of microalgae species in the port and in its coastal area was investigated. Di-n-butyl phthalate, Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate as well as aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were identified through GC–MS chromatograms released on sediment extracts collected from port sediments in July and November 2022. Microalgae identification and cell counts in both water-column and pore-water of samples were performed. The chromatograms revealed developed peaks of phthalates compared to those of aliphatic hydrocarbons with successive humps corresponding to an unresolved complex mixture, suggesting an advanced degree of biodegradation. In port sediments different species of diatoms, recognized for their capacities for hydrocarbons degradation such as <i>Skeletonema costatum</i> and <i>Nitzschia</i> sp.<i>,</i> were identified. The microalgae-cyanobacteria consortium as <i>Pinnularia</i> sp<i>.- Merismopedia</i> sp. seemed to exhibit strong tolerance to organic pollutants. The proliferation of diatoms in November shows their efficiency to hydrocarbon degradation as the intensity of their peaks has appreciably decreased. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, trace elements and toxic dinoflagellates such as <i>Karenia selliformis</i> have been identified in coastal sediments, suggesting their potential dispersion into the port channel via the tide currents.</p>
