<p>Focal cartilage damage to the knee joint often affects young patients with a&#xa0;correspondingly high level of activity and performance demands. If left untreated, this damage not only results in progressive osteoarthritis but also reduces the patient’s quality of life to an extent comparable to that of arthritis. The demands regarding surgical treatment of such lesions are correspondingly high. In addition to choosing the right cartilage regenerative procedure, correction of the often underlying accompanying pathologies also plays an essential role in the treatment of such lesions. While the relationships in the frontal plane have been largely worked out scientifically, the same principles also apply to treatment of the patellofemoral joint compartment and the ligaments.</p>
