<p>Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions represent a significant challenge for ensuring atmospheric quality in urbanized and industrial environments, whether because of the role they play in the formation of secondary pollutants, the high degree of toxicity of specific compounds, or the variety of species and emission sources. This study aims to identify the most significant emission sources for the phenomenon of atmospheric pollution in the area of Bangu, RJ, providing a replicable methodology for the integrated assessment of the toxicity and reactivity of the emissions. To this end, analyses based on previous samples collected in the region were performed with the open-source software Positive Matrix Factorization 5.0 (PMF 5.0). Toxicity and reactivity indices were calculated for each source and statistical analyses were conducted to explore the correlation between the pollutants and meteorological parameters. In addition, calculations of emission inventories were made based on the activity level of the studied sources. The results confirmed the importance of sources linked to the petrochemical industry in the region. Oil Refining (II) stood out from the other sources, concerning both the toxicity and reactivity of its emissions, which suggests that its control must be prioritized to ensure a good air quality in the study area. Despite its related uncertainties, the emission inventory results were generally consistent with those obtained by PMF 5.0. Further studies, addressing seasonal variation or the analysis of other groups of species, are recommended as a way of broadening our understanding of the influence of petrochemical complex emissions in the area.</p>
