<p>Microbial oils are of great industrial interest, mainly in sectors that aim to combat environmental problems, such as the use of fossil fuels. Thus, they have become important to help the United Nations (UN) reach sustainable development objectives. However, one of the limiting factors today is their production cost. In this study, the kinetics of lipid biosynthesis by <i>Rhodotorula mucilaginosa</i> CCT 7688 was evaluated during cultivation in sugarcane molasses and corn steep liquor, agroindustrial byproducts that were the only components of the production medium. The fatty acid profile is known to be extremely important to oil properties and its subsequent applicability. Two agroindustrial culture media in batch and fed-batch modes were studied. The main fatty acid found throughout the cultivation was oleic acid (average from 60 to 78%), followed by palmitic acid (average from 14 to 24%), in both culture media, with no significant changes in the profile before 240&#xa0;h of cultivation. The highest intracellular lipid content was 46.7% (6.4&#xa0;g L<sup>−1</sup>) in 120&#xa0;h of cultivation in the batch mode. The red yeast <i>R. mucilaginosa</i> CCT 7688 was viable as a source of nutrients solely originating from industrial byproducts. It has great potential to produce microbial oil of interest in various industrial sectors, such as biodiesel production and food products.</p>
