摘要

Political participation is considered essential for democracy, yet electoral turnout among young people has declined in recent decades. In Estonia, as in other post-soviet countries, young people have become disengaged from electoral and party politics. However, social media platforms, including Twitter, have played a significant role in shaping their political subjectivity with a focus on global movements of social justice. Social media provides a new logic for political identity and group formation, and over the past decade Twitter has played a crucial role in increasing political participation by facilitating activist networks, mobilising young people through information-sharing, enabling real-time coordination of action, and serving as a direct channel for unfiltered news. However, since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022, several changes on the platform have hindered its use for political and civic engagement. The empirical section of this study is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted on Twitter during Spring 2022 and Autumn 2024, complemented by in-depth interviews with the same Estonian Twitter users in both periods. Findings indicate that Twitter has served as a valuable source of information, a space for political discussion and, to some extent, a catalyst for societal change among Estonian youth. Algorithmic changes have amplified international news for the participants, fostering greater interest and discussion on global issues in Estonian. However, the proliferation of spam bots, increasing use of AI and the spread of misinformation have undermined trust in the platform’s capability to support political participation.
