Narratives of Incarcerated Indonesian Young People: Educational and Social Perspectives
摘要
This article presents a narrative inquiry, informed by Bourdieu’s social reproduction theory, examining youth incarceration and educational experiences within an Indonesian correctional facility. The research is situated within a significant policy transformation from punitive to rehabilitative approaches in facilities known as Lembaga Pembinaan Khusus Anak (LPKA), which deliver formal and non-formal education, vocational training and cultural activities. Our study illuminates education’s transformative potential for young people in detention, emphasising the importance of addressing diverse needs to prevent marginalisation. The research reveals how institutional structures and socio-economic backgrounds influence their educational experiences within the facility and their post-incarceration aspirations. Despite notable progress, significant challenges persist, including shortages of qualified educators, resource limitations and societal stigma. We advocate for increased educational resources, enhanced support systems and broader societal acceptance. Whilst the study’s limitations include a small sample size and single theoretical lens, suggesting the need for broader-scale research, these young people’s narratives powerfully demonstrate education’s capacity to foster resilience and develop social capital. This indicates the importance of advocating for inclusive educational policies within Indonesian correctional facilities.
