<p>The transmission of values from parents to children is complex and influenced by several factors, including parental values and the family environment, all of which play an important role in this process. Given the strong influence that materialistic values have on family dynamics and the construction of an individual’s life goals, understanding the mechanisms involved in transmitting these values is vital. This study aims to investigate how the family environment influences the transmission of materialistic values and the life goals of children. 208 young adults participated in this study (168 women and 40 men, M = 20.20; SD = 6.42 years). Moderated mediation analyses were carried out, considering materialism in children as a mediator in the relationship between parental materialism and children’s life goals, and the family environment perceived as a moderator of the relationship between parental materialism and materialism in children. The results revealed that parental materialism alone did not predict a child’s extrinsic life goals. However, parental materialism exerted an influence on materialism in children, when combined with the family environment. In the democratic environment, the relationship between parental materialism and materialism in children was positive; in the authoritarian environment, the relationship was negative. It is concluded that the family environment can enable the transmission of materialistic values, influencing the subject’s life objectives and guiding their focus towards extrinsic objectives.</p>
