Cluster Analysis of Psychological Factors in Non-Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

While the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is well-established, the heterogeneity in symptomatology among patients underscores the importance of understanding their cognitive behavioral profiles. Such insight would be imperative for optimizing the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. In this study, we classified individuals with IBS based on cognitive and behavioral factors. We conducted a cross-sectional survey. The data were subjected to a hierarchical cluster analysis and the Kruskal–Wallis test, with clusters as independent variables and scale scores as dependent variables. Of the 307 respondents, 91 (11 men, 80 women, mean age 20.47 ± 4.35 years) met our clustering criteria. The analysis revealed three clusters, including diarrhea–indigestion, multiple symptoms, and anxiety–depression. The Kruskal–Wallis test revealed differences between these clusters in terms of cognition and behavior. Multiple types of cognition may affect, differentiate, and exacerbate IBS symptoms. Studies should confirm their relevance to CBT for IBS, thereby facilitating the development of CBT interventions that are best for individuals with IBS.
