An Exploration of the Interplay Between Narcissistic and Empathetic Traits and Attitudes Towards Coercive Controlling Behaviours in Intimate Partner Relationships

Coercive control, the multitude of non-physical abuse tactics utilised to control an intimate partner, is a complex yet poorly understood area. This study focuses on individual-level risk factors for IPV by exploring the interplay between personality traits, specifically narcissism and empathy, and coercive control within the general population. The study uses a correlational quantitative approach with a transversal design. Three hundred and thirty-eight participants from the general population were recruited via voluntary sampling using online methods. Participants read four vignettes depicting different relational scenarios at a single time point and were asked questions on the severity of the acts, followed by scales assessing narcissism and empathy. The inclusion criteria were accepted to participate in the research voluntarily and be of legal age. The exclusion criteria were not having completed the questionnaire. Notable findings revealed narcissism significantly predicted the seriousness of coercive controlling behaviours, such that as narcissism increased, perceived seriousness decreased. Empathy significantly predicted vulnerability scores, such that as empathy increased, the accuracy of victim vulnerability decreased. Efforts to develop specific intervention programmes which confront narcissistic cognitive distortions and promote emotional decoding processes are needed to help teach perpetrators new skills to control their behaviours and build their empathy for past and potential victims.
