摘要

The taxonomic status of Manis aurita (Hodgson, J Asiat Soc Bengal 5:231-238, 1836) remains uncertain due to the lack of a true holotype specimen, the inconsistent historical use of its name and the absence of molecular assessment of the existing lectotype. Alternatively, Manis indoburmanica, a putative phylogenetic species which was recently described following integrated taxonomy, demonstrated ~ 3.4 million years divergence from Manis pentadactyla in North-East India and North-West Myanmar. Through a time-calibrated Bayesian based phylogeny and with the inclusion of new sequences from Nepal, we validate the existence of Indo-Burmese pangolin from central and eastern Nepal, North-East India, and North-West Myanmar. We believe that adopting the name M. aurita, as advocated by Zijlstra (Mamm Biol 105, 2025), over M. indoburmanica, without widespread recognition and genetic validation would create taxonomic instability and confusion in pangolin nomenclature. Therefore, we reinforce for taxonomic recognition of Manis indoburmanica over the claims of Zijlstra (Mamm Biol 105, 2025).
