<p>The use of arboreal habitats by small mammals is influenced by forest types, as different activities require distinct resources. We investigated whether nesting and hoarding behaviors of the small Japanese field mice (<i>Apodemus argenteus</i>) vary by the forest type. From June to November 2023, we installed 228 nest boxes in broadleaf forests, mixed forests, and cedar plantations and observed nesting and hoarding behaviors. We analyzed the effects of forest type and other environmental factors on these behaviors. Nesting activity was higher in broadleaf forests&#xa0;than in cedar plantations, whereas hoarding behavior was more frequent in cedar plantations. This variation in hoarding behavior may be driven by differences in nesting material availability and food resources. Our findings suggest that arboreal small mammals select habitats in trees based on the specific requirements of their behaviors.</p>
