Analysis of land use changes and soil erosion in the Wadi Larbâa Basin (Eastern Pre-Rif, Morocco): a spatial assessment from 1984 to 2024

Located in the eastern Pre-Rif north of Taza (Morocco), the Wadi Larbâa Basin is a particularly susceptible ecosystem where hydric erosion has devastating effects, leading to substantial yearly land loss and excessive sediment generation. The primary aim of this study is to examine significant alterations in land use and to assess soil erosion and its spatial distribution. To fulfill the aims of this study, a methodology was employed, principally centered on the analysis of satellite imagery to create a thematic map of land use and spatially assess hydric erosion, using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in conjunction with geographic information systems. A field investigation was conducted to validate and justify the results obtained from soil loss measurements. The spatiotemporal progression of land use in the Wadi Larbâa Basin from 1984 to 2024 distinctly indicates multiple key patterns. Arboriculture increased by 51%, while the area under cereal crops fell by 32%. Additionally, uncultivated land has increased significantly (33%). The woodland area has also increased by 10%. Quantification tests indicate that average soil losses are well above tolerance thresholds, with a recorded value of 49 t/ha/year. Losses are unevenly distributed, with the greatest losses occurring on uncultivated or abandoned land (> 80 t/ha/yr), which has a changing surface area each year. However, cultivated land is subject to losses of 40 t/ha/year. The lowest values concern reforested and forested areas.
