A Comprehensive Review and Analysis of Blockchain Driven Identity Management Solutions for Enhancing Security and Transparency in Education

Identity Management Systems (IMS) play a vital role in authentication and authorization across organizational applications. However, traditional centralized systems face significant challenges such as data breaches, limited transparency, and restricted user control. These issues highlight the need for decentralized identity management. Motivated by the rising demand for scalable and compliant IMS in education, this review explores the feasibility of blockchain-based Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) systems to enhance data security, student autonomy, and institutional trust. The review encompasses peer-reviewed literature from 2019 up to 2024, selecting 80 highly qualified articles from academic databases. The review is guided by three research questions relating to technical challenges, legal compliance, and evaluation frameworks for blockchain-based SSI systems in education. Findings reveal that blockchain-assisted SSI frameworks provide enhanced security features, improved data ownership, and verifiable credentials. The use cases also extend to tamper-proof academic certification, secure credential sharing across institutions, and real-time access control. Challenges pertain to compliance with privacy laws, vulnerabilities in smart contracts, and a lack of evaluation datasets specific to education. While still in its early stages, blockchain’s transformative potential in education is substantial, offering a resilient structure for improved identity governance, verifiable learning credentials, and enhanced institutional trust.
