Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence Systems on Higher Education in India – A Delphi Study

The recent Generative AI (GAI) models and utilities are providing better user experience than the previously known AI technologies which are leading to many sweeping societal implications. In the field of education, there are several studies about the influence of these models on different aspects of academics. While many encourage using GAI by leveraging its capabilities in information processing, and increasing efficiency for both teachers and students, many others are critical of the biases it can create and challenges it can pose in long term. There are also some fundamental questions regarding ‘handing over millennia of knowledge to machines,’ and the ‘purpose and role of technology in opening new frontiers of understanding and knowledge.’ Studying the impact of GAI systems on Higher Education in India is complex due to the vast linguistic diversity among its 40 million student population enrolled in more than 1000 universities. Delphi approach is a research tool for obtaining reliable consensus of a small group of experts on complex subjects, so that the collective intelligence could be used for deriving practical guidance on the subject. Present study takes the consensus opinion of Indian experts based on Delphi method on the usefulness of GAI for students, its likely long-term impacts, its effects on Teaching-Learning processes, and other related aspects. Based on the key findings, suggestions are made on how Indian education space could evolve using GAI capabilities. Conclusions drawn from this study could be useful for framing educational policies using the Generative AI models and utilities.
