摘要

The introduction of immersive technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), in healthcare is creating new opportunities for palliative & supportive care. However, evidence on the effectiveness of these tools and the adoption into Metaverse is limited and unorganized. This scoping review aimed to examine the literature related to VR and AR research as interventions in palliative & supportive care as well as to consider the relevance of the concept on Metaverse. A modified application of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was used. The literature obtained from Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed before October 1, 2022, was reviewed with the keywords ‘Virtual Reality’, ‘Augmented Reality’, ‘Metaverse’, and ‘Palliative & Supportive Care.’ Data extraction, quality assessment, data synthesis, and risk of bias assessment were performed. A total of 15 research were eligible out of 1,661 records and the majority showed that VR was efficacious at decreasing pain, and anxiety in patients. There was heterogeneity in the research in terms of the type and method but the concept of these technologies was feasible and integral to the core principles of palliative care. VR and AR were promising for pain relief and emotional support in palliative care. The review suggested that Metaverse was a developing environment radically facilitating the delivery of palliative & supportive care. Future research should draw on psychological theory and assess implementation at scale.
