From Blueprint to Impact: Deploying EHRVault for Secure, Patient-Centered and Privacy-Preserving Electronic Health Record Management

With the proliferation of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), the healthcare sector faces mounting challenges related to data security, privacy, interoperability, and regulatory compliance. To address these issues, we introduce EHRVault, a robust blockchain-based platform designed to enhance security, scalability, and regulatory adherence in EHR management. EHRVault integrates Hyperledger Fabric for its permissioned blockchain, coupled with InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) for decentralized storage, ensuring data integrity, availability, and tamper resistance. The platform employs AES-256 encryption for securing EHRs and Crystal Kyber, a post-quantum key encapsulation mechanism, to safeguard key exchanges against quantum cryptographic threats. Additionally, an advanced anonymization layer ensures patient privacy protection, aligning with global health data security standards. This work analyzes health data security standards to identify key security requirements, demonstrating that EHRVault fully complies, unlike many existing platforms. Additionally, we detail the design and implementation of EHRVault, along with an extensive performance evaluation. Our results validate that EHRVault is a secure, privacy-preserving, and scalable solution, meeting the stringent demands of modern healthcare data management while offering enhanced efficiency and resilience compared to existing approaches.
