<p>To evaluate the effects of a novel augmented reality (AR) treatment for hand osteoarthritis among military veterans in a a Phase 1 clinical trial. Participants completed a 30-day usual care treatment phase, followed by a 1-time training session with the AR app and subsequent 30-days of daily AR treatment. VA hospital. This trial recruited 36 U.S. military veterans reporting daily hand osteoarthritis pain intensity ≥4/10 and receiving prescription pain medicines. We evaluated changes in pain intensity, pain interference, depressive symptoms, and pain disability using validated self-report measures. Participants rated usability, satisfaction, and adverse events during AR treatment. Participants used the AR near daily on average. They rated the AR app as simple to use, moderately effective for hand OA symptoms, and that they would be highly likely to use the app again and recommend it to others. No significant adverse events were reported. Relative to baseline, participants reported significantly reduced OA pain intensity (mean=6.5(1.9) vs. 5.7 (2.1); <i>p</i>=.03; Cohen’s d=0.38)). The results of this Phase 1 clinical trial indicated than a smartphone-based AR app for hand OA pain could be a user-friendly, minimal risk intervention with moderate benefits on pain intensity in a veteran population.</p>
