<p>Asian rice gall midge (<i>Orseolia oryzae</i>) is the 3rd most devastating pest of rice, causing enormous yield loss. Up to now, no plant chemicals were identified from the resistant and susceptible rice genotypes which are responsible for manipulating the reaction of adult midges towards the rice genotypes. Of the differential chemicals recognized in this research, 4 chemicals, which are alkane in nature, viz. undecane, tetradecane, heptadecane and tetracosane, having the highest peak areas, were examined for studying the response of adult female gall midge using Y-tube olfactometer. Results indicated that, the female gall midge preferred the undecane-treated arm and made significantly higher numbers of entries (<i>P</i> = 0.05) and preferred to spend significantly longer time (<i>P</i> = 0.008), than in&#xa0;the untreated control arm. Whereas female gall midges stayed for significantly longer durations (<i>P</i> = 0.02) in the tetracosane-treated arm than the control arm, the number of entries was found to be non-significant. Results also revealed that, there was no significant response for both the number of entries and time spent when adults were exposed to tetradecane and heptadecane. Hence, the chemicals like undecane and tetracosane could be used for managing of rice gall midge.</p>
