Assessing the impact of urban land use on air quality: a case study of Kharagpur city

The Earth’s surface has been significantly altered in the past few decades because of urbanization, causing environmental deterioration and disrupting atmospheric dynamics. This study investigates the impacts of land use change on air quality utilizing a scenario-based approach. We analyze the land use patterns for three distinct periods for the study region along with Air quality data collected over six stations across Kharagpur. The results indicate a concerning overall trend of urban expansion, particularly in the eastern part, where urban areas have grown by 20.62%. This rapid development has led to a significant decline in both vegetative cover (11.23%) and agricultural land (9.29%). The air pollution in industrial zones increased to 63.59%. The analysis revealed that PM2.5 and PM10 as the prevailing air pollutants, most likely caused by nearby industrial activity, and observed a positive correlation between AQI and built-up areas alongside a negative correlation with vegetation and water bodies. Furthermore, this study explores two distinct future scenarios: one representing business as usual (BAU), which maintains current trends, and the other representing sustainable development (SD), which prioritizes environmentally conscious practices. Under the SD scenario, built-up expansion is relatively slower, with a reduced rate of decline in vegetation, water bodies, and agricultural land. Time series forecasting of PM10 concentration, however, shows an increasing trend in future scenarios, particularly during colder months (November to January). Notably, forecast outcomes highlight a rise in pollutant levels during winter, and a decrease in summer (August to October). This study emphasizes the critical role of preserving dense vegetation for sustainable development and creating healthier urban environments.
